Raise the Shield

What does it mean to stand firm when life feels like it is falling apart around us? In Ephesians 6:16, Paul calls us to take up the shield of faith, and this message unpacks what that actually looks like in the middle of real spiritual battles. The shield Paul describes was no small thing. It was a massive, door-shaped piece of armor, soaked in water before battle so that when flaming arrows struck it, the fire would be smothered before it could spread. That image alone is worth sitting with. The enemy does not just aim to wound us with a single blow. He aims to start a fire, to let one doubt become despair, one temptation become addiction, one accusation become shame. But faith, anchored in the character and promises of God, extinguishes the fire before it can consume us. This is not a message about positive thinking or self-confidence. It is a call to something far more powerful: actively trusting who God is, what He has said, and what He has already done. When we understand that faith is not the shield but rather the act of raising Christ as our shield, everything changes. He is the one standing between us and the enemy. Every arrow must pass through Him first.
