Rooted - Psalm 1

This message invites us to examine the health of our spiritual lives through a powerful metaphor: plants. Are we flourishing like a well-tended garden, or are we barely hanging on like a forgotten houseplant? Psalm 1 provides ancient wisdom that remains remarkably relevant today, contrasting two ways of living. Those who delight in God's word and meditate on it day and night are like trees planted by streams of water—deeply rooted, fruitful, and resilient when storms come. In contrast, those who live without God are like chaff blown by the wind—rootless, directionless, and vulnerable. The psalm doesn't promise that believers will never face difficulties, but it does promise that our roots in God will be strong enough to sustain us through rough times. This isn't about earning God's favor through perfect behavior; it's about intentionally positioning ourselves where spiritual growth can happen. Just as a tree doesn't choose to grow near water by accident, we don't develop deep faith by chance. It requires purposeful decisions about what we focus on, who we spend time with, and how we invest our hours. The challenge before us is clear: will we be deeply rooted trees or scattered leaves?
